Marietta, GA Might Be THE Ticket!
By roostblog
Marietta is located just 17 miles northeast of Atlanta and a tad bit south of the North Georgia Mountains where waterfalls flourish. It is the county seat and sits in the center of Cobb County. A population of just over 61,000 and low crime make Marietta a prime location to raise a family. In fact, BusinessWeek Magazine voted Marietta as the 2nd best city in Georgia to raise your kids. The results were weighted on school performance, safety, amenities and affordability.
Marietta became official in 1834. It is claimed that the town was named after the wife of Thomas Willis Cobb, then Senator and Supreme Court Judge. One of Marietta’s monuments to history is Oakton, which was built in 1838 and is the town’s oldest maintained residence. Many of the original buildings remain on the property, and the estate boasts spectacular gardens that highlight the 1870s boxwood parterre.

In 1892, Marietta’s high school was originally recognized as a Civil War hospital. Over 1,500 Union soldiers were housed in the school’s present-day gymnasium.
The high school’s current mascot is the Blue Devils. With a history of only two losing seasons since he began his post at the high school in 1972, Charlie Hood coaches one of the most successful high school basketball programs in the state. He’s also established one of the most successful programs in the country. Scores of college and professional basketball players originated from Marietta’s own teams. The city hosts higher education, too. Three colleges call the area home – Chattahoochee Technical College, Southern Polytechnic State University and Life University.
A notable historic landmark in Marietta is the Big Chicken, a Kentucky Fried Chicken throwback from the early 1960s. Locals often reference the Big Chicken as a landmark relative to driving directions – e.g., two miles north of the Big Chicken or turn right at the Big Chicken. Pilots use the Big Chicken to gauge the distance from local landing fields.
Major industries in Marietta include the Lockheed Martin manufacturing plant and Dobbins Air Reserve Base. The Board Lights & Water (BLW) is operated by the city and provides power and water to the city’s residences.
Grover Park, the city’s historic town square, sponsors several productions and public events throughout the year. Culture is captured here with Theater in the Square, the historical and renovated Strand Theater, Marietta Museum of History and Gone with the Wind Museum, also called “Scarlett on the Square,” that includes memorabilia from the movie and book.
Don’t be fooled by all the history, though, the town’s filled with modern conveniences and amenities – public parks, golf, fishing, boating, shopping, major water theme parks, restaurants, movies and activities for the kids. Wine tasting events are regularly hosted in the city, too. If you can’t find enough in Marietta to keep you busy, then wander over to the nearby metropolis of Atlanta for big city nightlife and more entertainment.
You’ll find that perfect home here in Marietta. It has much to offer in the form of real estate. Two-bedroom, two-bath condominiums start from $14,900 and single-family homes start in the $30s. If it’s luxury you’re looking for, then you’ll find it lovely beginning at around the $500s.

Souls in the Waves…
Good Morning, I just stopped in to visit your website and thought I would say I enjoyed myself….

I hear your passion about this. This story has getton national attention. I fault Cobb County Transit for not providing the proper markings for a pedestrian crossing. I am glad that she choose to have a new trial. I believe that a proper jury will be chosen and they will do the right thing. But most of all, I believe that these bus stops will have pedestrian crossings. I live in Gwinnett County and there is a place that is a transfer point on Buford Hwy and people have to cross a busy street.
